MPR Assures Constitution Amendment Not about Election System

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) speaker, Bambang Soesatyo, assured the agenda of the 1945 Constitution's amendment did not include the mechanism of the presidential election that has been held since 2004. Bambang delivered his statement before PDIP chair Megawati Soekarnoputri.
“This amendment does not revise the system of the presidential election. The update is limited to economic affairs and Indonesia’s development, not political system,” said Bambang in Megawati’s residence, Menteng, Thursday, Oct. 10.
As widely known, PDIP strongly proposed the amendment agenda. This was also the party’s requirement in supporting Bambang to be appointed as the Assembly speaker. Today, Bambang and several of his deputy visited Megawati to seek suggestions on the plan.
“Ibu Mega is the last president mandated by MPR, so we need to know her views,” Bambang added.
The former House speaker mentioned all parties agreed to implement democracy by practicing a direct voting system. According to Bambang, what is underlined in this amendment is designing a blueprint for public affairs for the next 50-100 years.
“The vision and mission of leaders, starting from the president to regional heads, must refer to this blueprint,” he said.
In addition, the MPR speaker promised that the executive body would open rooms as widely as possible for the public to deliver opinions about discussions on the amendment of the 1945 Constitution. “We want the public to take part by giving suggestions on this constitution that we will apply in the future,” Bambang concluded.
